La Jolla

La Jolla

A historically luxurious oceanside community with pristine beaches.

Welcome to La Jolla

La Jolla is a seaside community named after the Spanish word for jewel, signifying its picturesque location on the Pacific Coast. Europeans first settled in La Jolla in the 1880s. In 1884, philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps purchased considerable land along the waterfront and began investing in its development.

The city was incorporated in 1927 and soon experienced a major influx of residents. During the 1920s and 1930s, many exquisite hotels and luxurious homes were built along the waterfront, attracting wealthy vacationers from around the world. During World War II, this trend continued as Hollywood celebrities spent their winters in La Jolla.

Today, La Jolla is known as a vibrant coastal town with stunning beaches, pristine waters, and world-class cuisine. The city boasts a friendly, laid-back lifestyle with plenty of outdoor activities, arts, culture, and entertainment. With a mild climate year-round conducive to California’s iconic array of recreational options, La Jolla is an ideal place to call home.
